(Updated January 2003)
Welcome to HoyaSaxa.com, the one-stop resource for news and information on Georgetown University football and basketball. We hope you enjoy the visit, the links, and features available on it, and stop by often. First though, let's answer some frequently asked questions about the site:
How did all this get started?
In late 1996, I was working on a web page for the GU alumni club of Dallas-Ft. Worth (hence, "DFW HOYA"), when Georgetown called and said they were bringing their web pages in-house, so there was no need for my effort. But having paid for a personal web page and not wanting it to go to waste, I decided to convert the club's site into a series of links for Georgetown sports. The first page was for football (an early version of that page can be seen here) and by late 1996, a basketball page.
How did you get the time to put all this together?
In early 1997, I spent a number of months unemployed when my employer suddenly went out of business. By morning, I sent resumes out and set up interviews. By afternoon, instead of watching TV or staring at the ceiling, I started to add a page here and there to the web site. By the time I had a new job, I also had a much, much larger web site.
The site's original address was admittedly hard to find and existed on a a word of mouth basis. In late 1997, we made the move to HoyaSaxa.com (a domain owned by an alumnus in the Washington, D.C. area) and the results have been great.
How much time does it take to update the site?
Not as much time now, probably 45 minutes in the mornings (to search for articles) and 45 minutes at night for occasional page updates or to check the message boards.
How often is the site updated?
It's practically daily right now. If I've been watching a game on TV and can post the results that night, I'll do it--you'd be surprised how many fans are on the Net during a game. Otherwise, the updates are posted the following morning.
How many people have visited the site?
As of March 2005, over 2.3 million. In the past year we've had over 5 million hits to HoyaSaxa.com, which includes things like accessing graphics as well as multiple page views. Not bad for a site with no promotional effort and which is available largely through search engines.
Does Georgetown provide you with all the information on the site?
No--this site is independent of Georgetown and while we may link to an article or cite a statistic from their site, the information here is largely separate from their activities, which is fine for both of us. Much of the historical information (such as the all-time roster) predates both the HoyaSaxa.com and Georgetown web sites. The collection was part of a research project I was involved with in college, and this was introduced first on this web site, such as the player statistical database.
How do you collect the coverage on the page? Do you rely on inside sources?
The simple method behind the site is that we publish verifiable links to stories about the Hoyas, the Big East and college basketball, not in speculation. Over the last two decades of following the program, I've come to understand that anyone who claims they have inside information on Hoya Basketball is often fooling themselves. By providing this site for published stories only, I avoid the rumor-milling that is common on sports sites and maintain a good relationship with Georgetown officials as a whole in providing public information to Hoya fans, wherever they are. Besides, if fans want to speculate, that's what the message boards are for.
What's the difference between your site and GUHoyas.com?
GUHoyas.com (the official Georgetown site) provides updates and news on all teams from Sports Information, and they do a fairly good job of keeping people informed. HoyaSaxa.com provides regular updates on only two sports, football and men's basketball.
Why football? I didn't know Georgetown had a team...
Well, that's one reason why the football site has grown--to get the message out about Division I-AA Hoya Football, one of the better kept secrets around. The last few years have seen the best football on Georgetown's campus since the 1940's, and if you're a Hoya basketball fan, you should give the football program a look, too. The goals and expectations are different for the two sports, but the tradition and competitive nature of Georgetown Football is something that should appeal to all Hoya fans. (About 17% of the overall traffic to the site's pages is football-related.)
What about women's basketball coverage?
I really don't have enough regular information on the women's program to do it justice, but post links when I can. Perhaps a student or fan can build a women's page--I'd be glad to link to it and promote it as necessary.
A lot of sports sites joined a company called Rivals.com. Why not this one?
Rivals.com is a company hosting a number of new or formerly independent sports web sites under one roof. While this site was approached to move to Rivals, I declined. I'm not looking to make a dime from simply providing information about Georgetown, and which would be a conflict of interest if I were to do so. In short, this site is strictly not-for-profit and aims to remain that way.
What was the busiest day on the site?
On January 15, 2003, there were over 3,300 visitors. On the day John Thompson resigned (January 8, 1999), daily site usage (as measured on the front page counter) jumped from a then-average of 700 to over 2,100 unique users that day.
What is the busiest time of day for visiting the site?
The lunch hour--we receive more site visits from 12-1 pm than any other time of day. The quiet hour is 4-5 AM, which still averages about 5-10 users a day.
How can I get in touch with the site?
Suggestions and comments can be directed to sports @ hoyasaxa.com. To contact the domain owners for more information, e-mail them at info @ hoyasaxa.com
Any other recommended sites for Hoya fans?
Two come to mind: www.GUHoyas.com (the official site), and www.TheHOYA.com. Of course, these and other GU sites are easily found from the front page of HoyaSaxa.com, so we hope you'll visit regularly.
