Preview
There may be no more striking illustration of Georgetown's slide into the Big East ditch than its series with Providence. Prior to the reformation of the conference, Georgetown was 43-19 all time versus the Friars, and had not lost a game to PC since the 2005-06 season. Today's Georgetown team, tied for last with DePaul, has lost five straight to the Friars, who arrive Monday to complete a four game homestand.
Wins over St. John's and Connecticut were welcomed, but Providence is a better team than either of them. Georgetown has not defeated a Big East team named something other than "DePaul" or "St. John's in 355 days.
Providence has dropped two of three since its last meeting with the Hoyas, including a bad loss to DePaul where the Friars lost a 11 point lead in the final 4:48. Its win against Seton Hall on Saturday also saw the Friars drop a 16 point lead but rally late to win. Injuries and defense have been a concern for PC this season, and its ability to keep its starting five healthy and productive will be key to the game.
Georgetown has struggled all season with containing guard play, where Jalen Lindsey and Kyron Cartwright combined for 34 in the game earlier this month at Providence. Lindsey, with four threes against the Hoyas, was held to just five points total in the Seton Hall game and a tighter Georgetown defense could apply similar pressure to his stat sheet. Cartwright had 20 against the Pirates and continues to be its bellwether, as the Pirates are 6-1 when he scores in double figures and 6-6 when he does not.
The Friars have continued to get solid results up front, where Rodney Bullock and Emmitt Holt combine for 30 points a game. PC's problem continues to be its bench. While Alpha Diallo provides some relief at guard, 6-9 freshman Kalif Young is the only reserve that has seen consistent time on the floor in Big east play, averaging 3.7 points and 4.7 rebounds a game. The PC bench won't go beyond eight in this game, which provides a great opportunity for Georgetown to wear down the PC starting five via fouls and up-tempo offense.
Keys To The Game:
Tempo: The georgetown game on Jan. 4 was the only game PC has scored more than 65 points in Big east play. GU needs to get this game into the 70's and force PC to expend its bench.
Center Roulette: Inconsistent play from Bradley Hayes and Jessie Govan is a point of concern in this game. Look for Akoy Agau to play a larger role.
Rebounds: PC ranks near the bottom of Big East teams in rebounding, yet outrebounded GU 40-36 two weeks ago. This has to change for GU to prevail.
Last Five Minutes: PC is 12-1 when leading into the last five minutes, 0-6 when trailing.
