Preview

As the 2014 season approaches its end, owe looks back on a difficult, yet utterly predictable season for the Georgetown Hoyas--motivated, hard working, but under manned in most of its games this season. A trio of close losses were emblematic of a team that never let the scoreboard determine its performance, and to that the team and its senior class deserves a fitting send off Saturday against Holy Cross.

Unfortunately, such recognition appears to be unlikely. In a scheduling conflict, the men's basketball team is hosting Robert Morris across town at the same time as the Holy Cross game, depleting the unfinished Multi-Sport Field of most of its student population. Those students on the field will put hoops aside for one more day and focus on a Holy Cross team which is all too familiar with close games. Of its seven losses this season, five have been by seven points of less.

The HC offense goes as far as QB Peter Pujals will take them. Pujals has accounted for over 3,000 in total yards this season (2303 passing, 710 rushing), and, were it not for Fordham;s Michael Nebrich, would the be the league's 1st team selection at quarterback. A mobile quarterback, Pujals demands attention on very play. Four HC receivers average over 10 yards per catch, led by WR Jake Wieczorek (50-694-5). Only three of the Crusader starters are seniors, so this is a team building for the future.

Defensively, the Crusaders rank in the middle of the PL pack, keeping scoring down. Over the last six games, HC has allowed over 24 points just once. Senior LB John Zakrzewski leads the HC run defense, which has held its last three opponents to an average of 100 yards a game.

In its final week of 2014, there seems little to overturn a stagnant Georgetown offense that bogs down in mid-game and loses the field position game when it hurts most. While the hoyas may be able to run against the Crusaders, but they will win with a more aggressive passing game, something all but missing in the Michael Neuberger offense. The defense will do its part, but what's the key to the game? Turnovers, where the Hoyas rank #1 in the Patriot League in turnover margin and Holy Cross last. Georgetown was a net +2 in turnovers in last year's game at Fitton Field and need at least that to end a six game losing streak and work with a word all but lacking in the football halls of McDonough Gymnasium: momentum.
