Preview
After the embarrassment of losing at Arkansas State, can it get worse for Georgetown?
Unfortunately, yes. From three relatively inexperienced opponents, including Maryland, the Hoyas enter the Maui Invitational against a 31-win team from 2015-16 which returns four starters, with their best scorer coming off injury and cleared for Monday's game. If the Hoyas mail in the first half against Oregon as they did to Arkansas State, there won't be any room for a comeback.
All-America forward Dillon Brooks has been cleared to play in the opening round game but may see limited duty. The Ducks' lineup remains solid in his absence.
Oregon features a three guard starting rotation in Brooks' absence. Guard Tyler Dorsey, a pre-season Wooden Award selection, has struggled in the last two games from the floor (9 for 23) but is too good to stay in a prolonged slump. he scored in double figures in 28 of 35 games last season as a freshman, and many are pointing to Maui as a breakout effort for Dorsey. Point guard Casey Benson with a 4.88 to 1 assist to turnover ratio, also figures to drive the Oregon backcourt.
A familiar name could give the Hoyas some heartburn--former Villanova guard Dylan Ennis, now a sixth year senior for the Ducks. Ennis scored 16 in the Ducks' underperforming loss to baylor, but could provide some stability as Brooks eases back into the lineup.
That Oregon lost to Baylor isn't as shocking as Arkansas State, but it was surprising. the loss was largely a function of an abysmal three point shooting effort (3 for 21) by the Ducks. If oregon goes inside against Georgetown, it should have success. The tandem of 6-9 junior Jordan bell and 6-10 Chris Boucher average nearly 30 points a game between them, and Boucher is one of the nation's best shot blockers. The absence of Bradley Hayes (who is eligible to play Tuesday) will hurt the hoyas inside on this one, given the lack of progress to date in finding backups for Jessie Govan in the middle.
So how does Georgetown turn it around? Even if the turnaround doesn't result in a win, some basics must come to the forefront:
1. Interior Shooting: Georgetown tossed up a lot of unnecessary long distance shots in its last two games. Driving inside won't be easy but it must be done.
2. Isaac Copeland: Copeland's efforts were underwhelming against Arkansas State, and he intensity is visibly inconsistent. If Copeland can't or won't give 40 minutes of effort, substitutes should be considered.
3. Leadership: Three games are not definitive, but there is a lack of leadership on the court, which spells trouble. Someone has to take the reins of this team.
Keys To The Game
Interior Defense. Georgetown must be more aggressive on rebounds. Arkansas State exposed a week middle the feasted off second chance points.
Hold the Three: Oregon is shooting a mere 28 percent from outside. Georgetown needs to keep them to 35 percent of less. For its part, Georgetown must resist the temptation to turn this into a three point shooting contest. GU must stay off the there point line and take 15 or fewer opportunities.
Time Is Tight: The 2016-17 Hoyas have shown to be a poor judge of time and tempo this season. They must improve on not allowing the game and circumstances to get away from them.
