Preview
In a season full of gifts on its non-conference schedule, the Georgetown Hoyas saved the worst for last.
Amidst 351 Division I teams, Alabama A&M checks in at 349th, a number befitting the first team to ever play Georgetown on its schedule with an 0-12 record, and a 2-39 record over the last two seasons. The Bulldogs have lost 11 games this season by an average of 22 points.
On Thursday night, Alabama A&M trailed Michigan by 30 in the first half and lost by 50, 97-47, and figures to do much the same Saturday. Games in Ann Arbor and Washington will allow A&M to return home for Christmas with two guarantee checks totaling more than $150,000, and that's the real reason games like this are scheduled.
A three guard lineup forms the bulk of the Bulldogs' offense. De'Ederick Petty leads the team in scoring, while 5-10 Julian Walters has added to the stat sheet with a 14 point average in his first two games. The Bulldogs are also getting good efforts from 6-2 guard Arthur Johnson, but the three guard offense lacks the size to defend the perimeter, allowing opponents to shoot 50 percent from the field and 41 percent from three point range.
Inside, the Bulldogs suffer from poor shooting and weak rebounding. Its two tallest players each average 41 percent or less from short range, although forward Evan Wiley leads the team with a 46 percent range on three pointers. Overall, the Bulldogs have not shot better than 43 percent in any game this season, making comebacks difficult to execute. Of grater concern--rebounding, where the Bulldogs have owned rebound advantages in half its games this season, but have not been able to capitalize. AA&M is not a tall team, with just nine blocks all season, and tend to struggle in up tempo efforts, which is Georgetown's likely game plan in this game.
This will be the last game this season when Patrick Ewing will have a free rein to substitute liberally to test Georgetown's preparation in certain game situations. With just nine healthy scholarship players, four of whom have never played in the Big East before, every minute of experience counts.
