Preview
The shorthanded Georgetown Hoyas return home Wednesday to meet a Seton Hall team which was, at least until Saturday, chasing Big East perfection.
In 40 years, no Big East team had gone undefeated in conference play and it won't happen in 2019-20, either. The Pirates shot a season low 36 percent against Xavier Saturday and allowed a season high 54 percent in the Musketeers' upset win at Prudential Center. The Pirates had previously won six straight following its 78-62 win over the Hoyas in Newark, and return the same weapons which GU was unable to address that evening.
Guard Quincy McKnight is likely to play Wednesday night, and if so, it's a matchup that won't serve the Hoyas well.
McKnight is a game time decision following an injury suffered in the Xavier game. His 11.5 points per game has been a driver to the Hall's run up the standings, with 15 against Xavier and a season high 20 in conference versus DePaul, and his defense is no less important.
Senior guard Myles Powell (21.4 ppg) was held to just nine points in the Xavier loss and that won't repeat itself Wednesday. While his conference numbers are down somewhat, Powell needs to rediscover the three point shooting that has eluded him (3 for 21), and any turnaround in his game may put this game out of reach given Georgetown's remaining depth at guard.
The Pirates could see some lineup changes at forward, where 6-6 Myles Cale has been in a free fall since a 16 point game versus the Hoyas on Jan. 3. He's averaged just 4.5 points a game since, and is averaging just 26 percent from the floor in his las three. Cale still brings the defensive effort but if his shooting struggles continue, the Pirates may look to Jared Rhoden, who replaced Tyrese Samuel in the starting lineup mid-season, for additional firepower. Rhoden has thee consecutive games of double figures with 14 points and 8 rebounds a game.
Seton Hall has a number of good options inside, putting pressure on an inconsistent Georgetown presence in the pivot. 7-2 Romaro Gill leads the conference with a 64 percent shooting percentage, almost all at close range, with 15 blocks in his last three games. The return of 6-11 Sandro Mamukelashvili also gives the Hall some options, as he added 10 points in 16 minutes versus Xavier.
Georgetown's problems in this game are notable and not easily addressed--the depth isn't there, the defense isn't there, and they will rely on a second game of poor Pirate shooting to contend. Georgetown's win over St. John's masked a awful second half by the Redmen in ball possession, giving up turnovers on 12 of its 37 second half possessions. It's difficult to see a Seton Hall team making those kind of mistakes in such regularity.
Some keys to the game:
Jagan Mosely: He's become Georgetown's go-to defender, none more so than Wednesday. As was the case versus the hall in January, Mosely must look to cut Powell off from drives off screens.
Option B: Who becomes the hoyas go-to scorer outside Omer Yurtseven? Jahvon Blair caught St. John's napping on a few series but the Hall won't be fooled. This is the game that almost demands a command performance from Jamorko Pickett to stay close.
Foul Trouble: Simply put, Georgetown can't afford it.
Romaro Gill: Gill's numbers have been down of late but his battles with Yurtseven will set the tone for this game. If Yurtseven is able to get position and drive inside, Georgetown can control the lane and pick up points from the line. Without it, it would rely on a weak three point shooting attack that will get this game out of hand in short order.
Bench: The Seton Hall bench will be a factor in this game--will Georgetown's? Granted, it's thin, but the GU bench produced only one point in Sunday's game.
